The Origin of Santa Fe-Coronda Marathon

Coronda... It was forty days left to the first aquatic marathon and nobody knew about it yet. On a December day in 1960, a neighbor, Dermidio Cabral brought up a suggestion that he had picked up in Santa Fe from someone he had only known so far in this city, through some journalistic publications.

It was an idea conceived by a man called Carlos Larriera, and he let it know another neighbor, Wefil Fredy Castro, who, as any self-respecting son of his town, is always involved in the activities contributing to the general progress of the town and area. It seemed interesting- and undoubtedly it was- and the news started to spread at three or four café meetings.

Soon after that, several names were already enthusiastically joining this initiative and they decided, somewhat philosophically, to invite people from Santa Fe to know the idea closer. Larriera came and the talk took place over a table at the bar, next to one of the sandy streets of the centenary city of Coronda.

There were many problems to be solved, at the top of which the problem of resources stood at the forefront with inexorable seriousness. Even the word "improbable" came up, however, it did not intimidate the enthusiasts, encouraged by the almost meridian clarity of what a sporting competition such as the one being proposed would mean for the area, which had obvious touristic pretensions.

The birth took place at Club Regatas Coronda in mid-December. Carlos Larriera arrived and the friendly round was held in an atmosphere of uncontainable enthusiasm. The odds were definitely weighed and the final decision was manifested in the spontaneous election of the first board of directors.

Thus became a reality theINTERNATIONAL AQUATIC MARATHON OF THE ARGENTINIAN LITTORAL, CORONDA RIVER, the same enthusiasm of the first hours has transformed in only three editions into one of the largest nautical competitions in the world.
